100 things about my dad

First, I was worried this would be hard-it wasn't. Second, I know there's a lot that my sister and my step-mom would add that's not on there. I wish I could read their list too, anyone else's for that matter.

Here's my man and his papa riding his two-wheeler! He still only knows how to stop by crashing and that's beginning to turn him off riding, but I have faith he'll get there soon!

Morning Delight

The tinkle of a bowl being set on the counter gently woke me out of a deep and much needed slumber. Realizing that it must be the hands of a four year I drifted between waiting for the crash of the bowl or the sound of spilling food. Before I knew it a bowl full of plain yogurt was approaching the bed. Before I can find the perfect balance of words that say, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH A GIANT BOWL FULL OF YOGURT IN MY BED?" and "What, hunny, are you doing with a giant bowl full of yogurt in my bed?" He says, with grade pride, "Here momma, breakfast in bed." A bowl of plain yogurt has never tasted so sweet.

He then said, "You look thirsty." And proceeded to serve me a glass of ice water from his water pitcher. I hope I never forget this morning.

Mother's Day-Just The Highlights

OK, so it didn't start off too well when Brad had to tend to Landlord duties first thing this morning. Our basement, you know the one we just finished and just had carpet installed like two weeks ago, flooded last night. About a third of the carpet-soaked! So off he ran back to sop up more water, rent a giant fan. King and I picked up and washed three loads of towels . . . but finally he felt all that could be done was done.

By then I was done moping around feeling frustrated. I'd decided, life is what you make it, and well I could make it miserable or make the most of it. King and I started some gardening projects: Planted my starts outdoors. Moved stuff out of the pond, just enjoyed the sunshine.

And here's what I was rewarded with. . . by later afternoon, a seat in my chair next to the pond and a great view of some local visitors stopping by. Family and friend birders, please let me know if I've gotten any wrong.

The Pink Think

I've been thinking and reading about pink. And I came here now to say, I embrace the pink. Let him have his pink. Let him embrace the color and stop calling it a girl color. Afterall, I have asked, "It's a color how can it have a gender?" But then, just as I begin to type one more thought comes into my head. . . he's four, is it fair for me to send him out to fight this battle for taking pink back for the guys. He doesn't have a clue what he's getting into. Then another thought. . . perhaps that's exactly why I should let him have his pink room with flowers on it because he's the perfect unwitting little pink soldier.

OK, maybe the real thing is I should stop psycho analyzing his color choice and paint his stinkin' room what ever color he wants it. If he loves it great. If he gets teased we deal with that, when and if it happens. If he gets tired of it, or changes his mind, or plain old doesn't like it before I have the time or money to paint it again he'll have to accept that. Isn't that what parenting is all about? So pink or what ever color. . . that's what it'll be. I can't wait to see what he picks out. Embrace the free spirit; Lord knows I need to WAY more often then I do.

His room might end up all pink and flowers, but his head screams, chocolate chip maker, fossil hunter, and submarine owner . . . And it's not that I'm OK with these choices because they're boy choices (and that gives me/him balance) it's because they're just great choices that are his means to learning right now!

PS. Thanks Auntie T-bone for sending me some Pink Think.

Pink . . . really

I hate gender casting my son, though I know I do it, often. I try not to when I can. We moved, you know. He/we want to paint his room and I want to let him pick his colors, after all it's only paint. He wants pink and green/turquoise. Do I let him? Will this be an expression of self or something he will be teased about then we will need to repaint it. Will he have the confidence that should teasing ensue he can fend it off? I'm so torn. I really don't want to say he can't but I also don't want to spend all the time doing something and then him turning around after seeing it and hating it and having to re-do it. . . Any thoughts?

New words

Kingsley, "You can use my drowner."

me- "Your what?"

K- "My drowner. You know for the strawberries, to let the water through."

me- "Oh, your strainer."

K- "Yeah the strainer-drowner, grammy brought me."

I love when little ones learn new words!

Deep Thoughts by Kingsley

"My head is spinning with question marks. They're saying show me where South America is. On the top of South America is where. But they have different things there. They have a track there that's not like ours. It's like an upside down railroad." I have no idea what he's thinkin' of but he clearly does.

My Song

As I snuggled Kingsley in bed tonight he sang me this beautiful song. I believe it is sung to the tune of "You are my Sunshine"

I like to snuggle you
I like to snuggle you
I like to snuggle you
You like to snuggle me.

You are so warm and snuggly.
I love you so much you're so warm and not all stinky.
You are not stinky.

-Pause

How did you like my story?

me-I thought your song was beautiful.

him-I have just so much happy I wanted to give you some happy too.

You can't make this stuff up!

Birthday delights

I love birthdays, including my own. How cool is it that we get to celebrate someone else just simply being! Today was pretty special. I feel pretty special. Both my guys made me feel pretty special. I was brought coffee this morning and chocolate last night. I received a couple of planted seeds, that I can't wait to nurture to fruit-literally (cantaloupe and pumpkin, hand picked by my favorite four year old). A day full of packing. A run of errands, a quick walk with my guys, and finally a special dinner made and cleaned up by not me.

A delicious salmon strawberry mango mmmmmmm delicioso.

And a tall tower cake, this high!! Made and designed by my favorite little man. I love you both. One of my favorite birthdays ever!

Day one of packing

Here's to boxes and chaos. But also the excitement of a new home and some wonderful family who can take some toddler items off our hands.

New stuff

I should remember that not everyone in the world is on Facebook. And frankly, I should not be on Facebook. But atlas I haven't been able to give it up. So let me give you all an update on what's new in this house.

We bought a new house. We're renting our current place, at least for the next year.

Secondly, Kingsley is in a language boom and his class is really taking advantage of it. He wrote with the movable alphabet "bunyrabit" and "swimglsns" among other things. That's better than Brad can do. Picture coming.

Third, it's spring and the river is super high. Probably the highest it's been since we moved here.

Procrastination, Perfection, or Writer's Block

So I haven't been posting here lately, and I notice I rarely stick with anything for too long. Is it the many ideas swimming in my head that overwhelm me so the rest of me goes running for the hills to hide. I'm not sure. I could go on and on about my inner turmoil but that's for my shrink to figure out not you all.

Besides, I could look at it like this . . . What's really wrong with the people that feel the need to be good at everything. Ah yes that makes me feel better. Only for a moment tho, now I wonder why I must divide everything into good and not good. Ok, I'll write that down for therapy too.

As for Magoo, I think he's in a language boom. He's way more chatty lately, that's always fun (seriously and sarcastically). I caught myself nearly stifling it yesterday as he wouldn't stop talking and as I'm not used to it I turned and rather sourly said, "WHAT." Oh yeah, don't I want him to talk, must it only be on my terms? Sorry hun, go on with what you were saying.

Pretty much most of the time I feel like I could just eat him up. Not that I like to eat children, I don't. I just think he looks particularly sweet (and tasty). I remember having the feeling when he was born that I just wanted him to be a part of me. Remember on Terminator when the metal just oozes back into the guy, that's what I want, not really to eat him but for him to be like a piece of mercury, can ooze together yet also function as a separate little bead of mercury.

Have we mentioned we're buying a new house? I'm thrilled and nervous. It will be so beautiful, I can't wait to share it with you.

Have I mentioned I'm going back to school this summer? Montessori Training. I'm thrilled and nervous. But as I've been working on my application I've been getting more and more excited.

Is that enough new news?

Friday, February 26, 2010

OK, I haven't updated anything for a long time. So here are a few things we've been hearing a lot of in our home lately.

On the floor are several pieces of artwork Magoo is being encouraged to send to friends and family. He lifts a piece of art, inspects it, considers it, and says, "I think I'll keep this one." After deciding to keep several (more than he was giving) he states, "I'm not much of a present giver." I give up. I was able to talk him out a few carefully considered pieces; if you received one consider yourself lucky. If you didn't receive one I'm still working on encouraging his gift giving.

Also, he's take to saying "I was like . . ." Really, is he a pre-teen already?

Then he says "Guess what?" with about the same frequency of the above.

He wakes and dresses himself. His papa is still asleep. His papa inspects his clothing, "Great job getting dressed. Your socks don't match. You need to wear matching socks to school." Moments later a proud Magoo walks out, "I solved the problem, I'm wearing not matching socks on the bottom and matching ones on top." Two pairs of socks, child and papa are happy!
